Compensatory Happiness

Also, I suppose if anyone is going to beat the Mavericks in the playoffs I am surely happy that it's the Hornets. I grew to enjoy them during my/their time in and around Norman and Oklahoma City.

It's better than the damn Golden State Warriors.

When in doubt, point it out.

As I sit here at work watching the Mavericks get destroyed by the Hornets, a harsh reality has come to light.

I don't care.

Now don't get me wrong. I am certainly a Mavs fan, through and through, but a Dallas team has already been victorious in the playoffs this year. Another harsh reality has just come to light: that might make me sound like a bad fan.

I don't care.

As my friends who have spent any considerable amount of time with me during the past five or so years know, I watch any and every regular season game I can possibly manage when it comes to the Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars. In fact, when I can't watch the games I sit in my room/office and listen on the radio/internet.

Every year lately all three teams have been good, if not dominating, in the regular season. Then, when the playoffs come around complete and ultimate flops (sans the Mavs making it to the NBA finals*) happen and I feel let down and abandoned.

Well not this year. The Mavs showed all season they didn't have what it would take in the post-season. Josh Howard has been playing like a sissy, Avery Johnson has been making questionable calls (especially after the acquisition of Jason Kidd) and Jason Kidd, in my opinion, was not worth what we gave up. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but I haven't felt good about it all along.

I won't even bother going into what the Cowboys have managed to do in recent years.

I don't care**.

What I have on my plate right now is a Mavs team that made the playoffs with a respectable record, a loaded Cowboys team that has TWO first-round picks for the draft in a very important offseason and then the Dallas Stars.

The Stars are my pride. I've been over-wearing a hat I own with the team name on it, I drink (most) of my beer out of a pint glass with the team symbol on it and while at my desk at home my peripheral view is taken up by a flag bearing the team logo.

So after watching or listening to most of the games this year, the playoffs were a climax-of-sorts for me. I hoped for anything other than the usual. All recent years have been like what my girlfriend's dad refers to as the 'Coyote Ugly'; when you wake up in the morning and would rather chew your own arm off than wake-up the ugly broad next to you.

But not this year. Ive got a world class mate laying next to me now, the Stars have defeated the reigning Stanley Cup Champions and survived the first-round for the first time since 2003.

I still have a lot invested in the Dallas Stars, I certainly believe they are up to the task when it comes to any second-round matchup, but the team getting out of the first-round sure is nice.

So atleast for now I am happy. Even while Chris Paul does whatever he so chooses against an out-matched Mavs team.

Peace, Love and Swedish kids stepping up.

*Another complete flop in itself.

CONTEST!!! CONTEST!!! CONTEST!!!

I just thought of something while sitting at work. Naturally, it has absolutely nothing to do with anything work related.

I slave over these blog entries for hours* just so all of you people can read the terribly clever** things I have to say. Now I know that everyone is obviously just here for their own good, but I ask of you-- reader of my blog-- to give a little back.

After reading this entry, I ask you to post a comment. Not just any comment, though. I want you to suggest a book that you have read and think I might enjoy.

Also, I realize I only had 39 ticks on my website-counter (19 of which were probably me) in the first half-month. But if even half of the people suggested a book I'd have a pretty healthy to-read list.

People who suggest a book will be entered into a drawing for the GRAND PRIZE***. Winner everytime.

**Unimportant
*** My reciprocal suggestion--non-book related--but certainly related to how good your book suggestion was.

It has been brought to my attention that my blog has the capabilty to not only alienate my friends who are on tropical pacific islands, but make them feel nostalgic as well. The person made to feel this way, Mandy Mantzel (http://alottamovin.blogspot.com/), has requested that I do an entry about NASCAR. I'll try.

Mandy, yes, the fact that I am from Hurst, TX and have a moustache in my profile pic certainly makes me a prime candidate for NASCAR fan of the year, but the truth is you won't ever catch me watching a race.

Actually, only one person in the world has spotted me viewing anything NASCAR related on purpose (not just clips on SportsCenter, etc.), and that would be Allison, my girlfriend. After admitting that I feel obligated to point out the only reason it even happened...

I was invited to join a NASCAR fantasy league, and since I was done with my NFL season and hadn't joined an NHL or NBA one earlier in the year, I had no reason to decline. So when the first race of the season began there was enough curiosity to make me watch for all of seven and a half minutes. Now that it is four or five weeks into the racing season, I currently sit a modest fourth place in my league. Fourth place is outstanding for a person with my knowledge of car racing, especially considering there are actually 5 members.

I'm not bragging about one-upping the fifth member, in fact, I can openly admit that everything I have learned about NASCAR comes from Days of Thunder and more recently Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

Now, since I promised you I would do an entry on NASCAR, and do not think that I have so far pacified that yearning for your homeland, I will leave you with a few quotes from people who know much more than I do about this wonderful (?) sport (?).

"Race fans, I had inferred from my one trip to the Brickyard 400, fell into one of two categories: tattooed, shirtless, sewer-mouthed drunks, and their husbands."
- Steve Ruchin

(Okay, maybe not ALL of them will know more than I do.)

"I pity the fool who don't think NASCAR is a sport!"
- Mr.T

And finally...

"Finishing races is important, but racing is more important."
-Dale Earnhardt
